The story of homestead gardens

A love for growing

Homestead Gardens was born out of Ron’s love for growing quality plants. At 16 years old, Ron began working in tomato production greenhouses, where he was introduced to best practices in greenhouse growing. Soon after marrying Rosene, Ron began selling wholesale tomatoes in a rented greenhouse, before building his own in 1985.

the start of homestead Gardens

In 1990, Ron and Rosene began growing bedding plants for the first time. The beginning was very gradual—their first year they grew only a few flats of plants and some hanging baskets. But as demand for the excellent value and quality plants grew, Homestead Gardens began growing their selection of flowers and building more greenhouses along the way.

Homestead Gardens today

Today, Homestead Gardens operates with four greenhouses and a coldframe, while continuing to be family run and operated. Every year the bedding plant season begins with Ron seeding plants in the basement in November, and Rosene starting the transplanting in January.  While some are married and moved away, Ron & Rosene's seven children continue to help with everything from the seasonal bedding plants, to packaging fresh herbs for Stauffers of Kissel Hill, to traveling to Philadelphia farmer's markets to sell produce.
